Hi guys, Im new to these here forums, and just thought it would be a good place to ask if anyone knows any places I can do free bushcraft in leicester. So no special 'training' if thats the right word to use events, just a place where I can test out my skills and see what I can do.

Obviously the more freedom the better, so if its just the essentials of bushcraft (e.g. shelter making, fire making, that kind of thing) thats fine, but if you can go beyond to hunting for food (only small animals, like fish and bird, no deer) and chopping tree branches for tool crafting, that would be fantastic.

Well, hope to hear from you guys soon, as you can probably tell Im pretty new to bushcraft, and the accuracy of what Im saying in my post probably shows that, but I hope to hear back from you guys soon.
Thanks

Welcome to the forum Ostrich160. I'm a long way away from you and so can't help directly with your question, but there is plenty of general advice here. I do some volunteer conservation work in local woodland and have been able to learn all sorts of useful stuff from other volunteers and also meet people who have been able to put me in touch with local landowners. You could try looking at your local council website or wildlife trust to go down similar lines.

Is there anywhere I can do it on my own or with a group of friends (obviously Im not expecting a whole site to myself, but rather a site where we can just go off and do my own thing)

Hi Ostrich :)

You'll need permission from any landowner in the UK before camping, lighting fires or damaging anyones land-including cutting wood. I know of an overzealous farmer on the north side of leicester (I lived there for a while) who I'm sure would not hesitate doing time for putting some lead in a trespasser.

There are some good meets organized on here not far from you, full of likeminded people. Have a look at the meets section and Rough close, Northwood and White rose meets- they're all near Coventry :)

My advice is spend some time on here, attend some meets (they really are welcoming and non-elitist) and pick the brains of likeminded folk and then have a go at getting permission from somewhere. Guaranteed, somebody at the meet will be able to point you in the right direction :)

Hey ostrich, like the rest have said best bet is getting to a local meet. Among the white rose and north wood crowds there are a few of us from Leicester, south end like. White rose is in towcester near Northampton, rough close is Solihull way and North Wood tamworth, so all quite local.

Welcome to the forums

Welcome to BcuK :)

Now comes the unequivocal bit.........listen to what's being said to you.

People go to great lengths and efforts to gain permission to use land, and that being the case they won't tell a stranger whom they do not know, and who they have no history with, where their sites are; especially on open forum.

The best advice has already been given, make contact with folks, go along to a meet up in a bigger site, break the ice, see how you get on with folks; and then they might discuss other sites with you.

Failing that, might I suggest that you read these threads ?
