Side facets on stone and flint axes

Hi,
I have just joined Bushcraft UK. I am interested in stone and flint axes and wondered if anyone knows what the functional benefits of very pronounced side facets would be, or if these are just sylistic? Are they beneficial for splitting? Thanks, Kat

Hi Ed. If you do a Google image search for Danish thick butted axe there are lots of pics of straight sided axes. These are what I am referring to.
