When I first saw it I thought 'Bay Bolete' (Boletus badius). However, I'm usually miles out -- hence the reason I don't dare eat what I find!
What sort of habitat was it in? What trees were around it?
Probably not bay bolete as that stains blue when bruised. I'm tempted to say Brown birch bolete; edible, but doesn't have the best texture.

by beech and oak & silver birches which is known to be one of their habitats in the S.E

Aye, sounds more likely. See what I mean, I can't identify mushrooms! I would kill us all.
The colour of the cap reminds me of Slippery Jack (Sullius luteus), but the stem is off (Lack of pores). I always confuse Boletus with Suillus!

Slippery top near birch remains of spotty stem where the slugs have not been at it all looks like birch bolete to me but way past it's eat by date.
Looks like the brown birch bolete to me. The marking on the stem are the give away but i agree in that i think it's past its sell by date.
cool-m better go back and try find some fresher ones- shame really as this was a very large specimen!
