Ive got no probelms with heathland per se, I just think we need to protect our forests - even if they arnt ancient, as once they are gone, there will be houses on the land.

Well it's a reasonable point of view but this sort of secondary woodland really is very common and has undergone huge expansion over the last 50 years where heathland has undergone a remarkably drastic decline. The flora and fauna associated with secondary woodland are common and those associated with heathland rare that is why conservationists would go to some expense and lengths to undertake this work.

Plantation Forests are deserts in the terms of bio diversity, heathland is an important bio diverse habitat the fact that they are not fertile and nutrient poor is what makes them special which is why they are protected and unlikely to have planning granted , one of the most important and most threatened is lowland raised bog which is an important carbon sink large areas of this has been lost due to the short sighted planting of conifer plantations.
