Perhaps but natives can also use tools in stupid ways.

Sure, but a life time doing it is a good teacher. They use the axe in a way an old smith uses a hammer or an old gardener using a scythe. It might look careless but I think they know how dangerous (in a broader, long term way) an accident with the axe can be for them and their family.

The National Film Board Of Canada has a lot of great documentaries for anyone willing to do some searching.
With regards to their axe handling,they've been using axes since they started walking & are very aware of the dangers of chopping themselves in a remote area,sometimes learned the hard way.The risk is an accepted part of their life.
