I was contacted to make a sheath for an old Sheffield bowie for a local gut. I am not on Facebook where the appeal was made but a photographer I know passed on my details.

This is what I made and the knife

I have my late father's camp/Bowie, antler handle and nice steel, it lives in the wood and leather sheath he made.
As a trained harnessmaker he knew the knife would cut the stitches on a conventional leather sheath

I would suggest the welt of this sheath means the stitching will not be cut.
I have made wood and leather sheaths and wooden lined sheaths too but not due to worries of cutting stitching.
