Sharpen it properly but it a proper mask, rub down and oil finish the helve. Then take it out and work the absolute guts out of it :D. Its a great tool and should be thirsting for some wood ;)

Do you know Red I wrongly thought that they would be oiled out the box...regarding sharpening Red the ceramic side on the dc4 or does it need more work than that?
Sad but I'm quite excited....Dave
On another note I finished the laplander that I have been fannying around with for ages and I'm quite pleased for a first effort. Will get a pict on if I get the guts to....too many great craftsmen on here!

For home dharpening use a sanding block and some wet and dry plus a bit of leather and some......

Just check the article on "how to sharpen an axe" ;)

The helves aren't truly bad, bud I do find a light sand and an oiling preferable

After a couple of months owning my SFA, I did something that I never regretted.

I took an opinel knife, and using it like a cabinet scraper, I scraped off all of the finish on my axe. Then, I rubbed her down with linseed oil, by a fire. Doesn't slip in my grip, feels more comfortable. I also feel it's doing better for the longetivity of the handle, than the varnish(?) was.
