Once you sharpened your axe why dont yo buy a cheap axe for chopping wood that might have nails in so you wont care about a few nicks.
I bought a couple of axes for my scouts to use that were £7.99 in screwfix and they split wood fine and would rather use them than my SFA on an old fence.
