Self Stitching !!

  • Come along to the amazing Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
I think when you're in an emergency situation the pain of the stitching will blend with the pain of the gash so it might not be that much worse. Needles don't bother me when I was younger I pierced my own ears and repierced my tongue. I agree what someone said about the area being the key factor, I have to give myself 7 injections a day and one area might be really painful but on cm to the side wont hurt at all. If you're going to gash yourself make sure its at the top of the thigh around to the side or your bum and you'll be fine.

I think Id have to be in a really bad way to want to superglue myself though, surely that cant be good for you

Superglue was designed for emergency medical use. It was only after it was invented that people realised it was good for sticking other things as well. I have some medical superglue in my first aid kit. I got it from Doc at one of the Scottish meets. Doc also taught me how to suture - on a banana.

Its worth mentioning DO NOT USE NORMAL SUPER GLUE as it contains solvents etc has to be the MEDICAL stuff and has to be in date. Infact DONT do it yourself!!!

I aint ever stiched my self up, but I am trained to do it on others. Its quite easy to do really as long as it is a simple cut, tears etc.. can be a bit tricky, the most painfull bit is normally applying the anasthetic.

To be honest its best left to a Doctor as you can cause complications if ya do it badly.

I have to put in a word of warning here . A lot of you seem to like the "superglue" thing .
Well a friend of mine is a nurse practitioner in a walk in wounded medical centre . She had a child come in that had serious gash on his head , she was perplexed at the lack of blood . She mentioned this and the father said "course its not , i superglued it" . it was at this point that she noticed the childs head was swelling up big time ! The child had to go for surgery as although the surface was sealed , ithadnt beneath the surface and was still bleeding profusely . Superglue was invented in vietnam , apparently to stop the casevac slipping on the blood and falling out the helicopter . There is quite a difference between military and civilian first aid techniques and really you should stick to the civiy ones . If in a very remote area the line hazes a bit as its about keeping someone alive .

theres an invention i like to use it holds the wound together and u can use cotton wool to stop the blood, the name of the said invention is a plaster.very easy to obtain and most medical kits will have some in

S0rry to be a pain about this (no pun intended) - but you should NEVER use cotton wool on an open wound. This is because it leaves tiny hair like strands in the wound and is a major cause of infection.

Plasters - YES
Cotton wool - NO

Would this be a good time to ask whether there is going to be another formal BCUK outdoor first aid traing course? If not can anyone recommend a good/recognised one?
