After the fall of the barrier, my first clear thought was to somehow get to the city alive, enter it and buy a decent weapon. Good thing they didn't care much about coins back in the valley, so I could easily collect and stash away some for harder times.
I tell you, those orc scouts roaming the woods was quite hard to avoid. They have the nose of a bloodhound and as if that wouldn't be enough, I bet they can see in the dark too, or at least hear my clumsy trashing I call stealth...
I reached the gates in one piece, tho I ran into some wolves before and in the middle of the fight (I was running actually, but that sounds not quite heroic in an epic tale) a few nasty goblins managed to lighten me of my purse. Damn those rascals! I would like to skin 'em alive so bad!! Only I had the means...
Anyway I guessed right. The city still was secure and with the help of my old friends, a few jingling coins tucked into my boots, entering it proved to be a piece of cake. The guards are still under payed, just like in the old days, so they are always open for a little "discrete discussion".
The mighty city of Khorinis, prized jewel on the King's crown!
Well, at least that's what it was before the invasion. Now only a pallid shadow of its former self, a backwater settlement, nothing more, waiting to be ransacked and sweeped away from the face of the earth by the horde. Which, by the way could happen any moment, as soon as the last of the paladins leave. Lucky for me they are still here and not too lucky for me, they also confiscated every weapon in town, and the smith Harad is also kind of seized by them, working day and night, forging swords like a madman. - "DUTY" - he says, huh... don't make me laugh...
But he saw the remaining silver coins I fished out of my boots, and you know how the saying goes: "every saint has a past and every sinner has a future" so now I sit here, in this seedy inn, wait and drink. He said he has some off cuts and bits of steel, leftovers from previous swords. Maybe he can forge something useful out of them. Who knows...
"Buuuuuurrppp" - erupts a stout belch from the audience, a chronic boozer and last man still in the alehouse at this hour, before collapsing under the table.
Well now... I guess it is time to see, what the smith came up with...
And here she is!
It is 33.5 cm long, the blade is 18.5 cm long, 4 cm wide and 5 mm thick, forged of many off cuts, bits and pieces of previous blades and billets. A scrapmascus!
The handle is made of antler and bone. All housed in a thick leather sheath.

Hope you guys like it :)

Aha, in old Hungary!

Well, yes, it was part of old Hungary for some time, and now it is part of Romania. Countries come and go like the wind, but Transylvania was always unique in such way, that its natural borders were the Carpathians themselves.
It is actually an amalgam of nations, if you know what I mean :)
My best part of its history is, when it was a sovereign, stand alone state for 141 years with its own reigning prince in the high middle ages, and qvasy independent for about 300 in total, wedged between the Ottoman empire and the Habsburg empire. Never had a king of its own tho, but that is close enough ;)

Well, other people can be just as wise as a King.
You did produce some interesting people.
Vojvod Tepes. Elszebet Batory.

Yeah you are right :)
But actually Tepes was a prince of Wallachia and Elizabeth Báthory lived also far away, in now Slovakia ;)

Aha. I thought Vlad was from Transsylvania.
I thought Ms Bathory lived there too.. I know she was Hungarian. Slovakia is a new invention.
She invented the facial treatment where blood is used.
Would have made a fortune, had she lived today.

Yep, Central Europe has an interesting history.

That knife is far too beautiful to actually be used. It's the kind you'd buy just to show people what a nice knife you have. :D

Well, he lived for a time in castle Bran, which is technically Transylvania, but borders back then wasn't really pinned down, like nowadays are. He was the ruler of Wallachia, a neighbouring country, now also part of Romania, just as his father was.
The Bathory's were an immensely rich noble family back then, even richer than the king. They owned more than half of the country at one point. Actually she was born in Nyirbator, hence the name, which isn't technically Transylvania, but part of the Partium, a patch of land between Transylvania and Hungary.
Her husband was a warlord and also incredibly wealthy man. After his death, all the wealth went to her. Her bad reputation was caused of jealousy for her wealth and because she was in too good relations with her relative Bocskai István who was the prince of Transylvania and planned to attack the habsburg empire possibly with the aid of the turks, and it wasn't true at all. She was the victim of a classic made up game. But she couldn't be simply executed, because of her noble status. In reality she was quite kind to her subjects. Anything else is just wicked legend, and most of them rose well after her death.
And yes, Slovakia is a new invention, but the slovak people aren't. They are an ancient slavic race, just like the rest.

There was a good movie made about her. Czech / Hungarian I think I remember.

My question about the core steel is because I have encountered several Damascener blades where the edge is of an inferior steel. A couple made in Scandinavia, a couple made in Ukraine and Russia. In a couple of cases I think the maker 'missed' the core steel in the grinding.
It must be difficult to make those blades!

Those guys fighting the Turk were brave. I find it amazing though how the Turkish culture has left strong traces in the south east European cultures.
