cordage making (using gardening twine as a starter, but going onto nettles)?

Bamboo bow making?

However, in terms of terminology, are we talking about a SCOUT Troop, or a Cub PACK here?

Welcome to the site, btw, hope you have a good time!

If its a Scout Troop you could take some inspirations from either the Naturalist or Survival skills badge requirements - both of which are bushcrafty related.

One activity is unlikely to hold the interest of scouts for a few hours solidly though - best to break it up with games and other activities.

If you need to fill a few hours, why not combine a number of smaller bushcraft tasks to achieve a bigger goal...

For example:

Tracking (could be set tracks) - to get them familiar with the surroundings;
Foraging (if no suitable foods, to find other resources, eg. firewood, nettles, etc)
Craftwork (eg. making cordage, carving butter knives / spoons, even just preparing feathersticks)
Firecraft (maybe working in groups to use a bowdrill, or using flint & steel / ferrocium rod)
Food prep. (ponassing fresh fish, or the likes)
Backwoods cooking (ready for meal-time)

Depending on location and whether there's time, you could also fit in a bit of shelter building or other activities.

None of these will seem monotanous in themselves and as they are conveyed as different activities they won't be too big a task, yet the result is an afternoon of 'bushcrafting'.

Hope this helps.

hey,

im a young leader at my local scout group. We are aiming to do more back to basics scouting ie. only cooking on open fires, bivving out ect.. So with out group we have been explaining the basic ideas.

How about showing them to make shelters? Or another good one is whistle making or some other carving project. We find the best thing to is keep them doing something pratical!!!
