Roycroft pack?

Anyone use/have used a roycroft type pack on a regular basis?

Could you post some pics and give a review/tips?

I have made and used a couple and they are not too bad (better than packboards!)
Tips - make sure the bottom bar curves away from your back and that you pack soft stuff against your back... make the joints as strong and well fitting as possible ... make comfy shoulder straps (this one I used socks stuffed with grass!)

No. I have watched one being made and I did try it out, surprisingly comfy I thought, but I wouldn't want to walk too far with it.

Robin Wood posted here about a German Journeyman who visited with him, he had built his own pack for his Journey, you can see some pics here.

I find that it is more of an emergency type of pack. I would not want to undertake any serious travel with it. There is just no comparison between this type of pack and a modern pack.

It is my intention to make a more perminant wooden frame for a pack. (More like Oetzi)

I have started on the canvas section for this (also to be used without the frame like a canoe pack)

Really bad pics of.......Light weight canvas treated with greenland wax, meshed with natural cord for strength.

It has a wooden board in the back that can be removed for "admin" tasks

Leather tabs.... just need to finish the lid

I always make my wife carry my equipment as well! I find it gives her a better understanding of my need for titanium equipment!

where does one forage the pack animal ?

And are her hands bound, with the pack tied around the neck. What sort of wood makes the best whip ?

A nice piece of hazel suffices! I might teach myself how to use a kettle soon, to save the poor girl from at least one camp chore.. (Then again??)
