When this idea occurred to me I felt almost sure someone somewhere must have done this before. Google was not helpful, so I decided to pick the collective brains of BCUK on the matter :D

My car (a Zafira) has one of those boots that opens straight up the way and creates a little walk under area that keeps you dry when loading the car.

For more complete shelter I know you can buy extremely expensive "tailgate tents", but how about just draping a tarp over the open boot lid and pegging it down? Perhaps using some poles to extend the tarp out the way?

Has anyone ever tried this?

Hi Wook

I had a look at doing this on my berlingo but after some consideration I dismissed it as too much hassle for what I was wanting to achieve Quicker to put up a tent .
You would first have to figure out how too lock off your tailgate in the open position ie. use a pole to stop it shutting.
It all depends on what you want to achieve , it is doable what use are looking for
sleeping cooking living area ?

I've seen it done before, probably the same principles as using a tarp to extend a tent canopy, should be easy enough with a bit of cord and some poles.

Make up a long bungee to hold your tarp down where the tailgate hinge is. Have hooks on each end to hook onto the rear wheel arches. Add a coupla poles at the back end and there you are.

I sometimes set up a large tarp over my car and put the back seats down for sleeping. Its a good set up for the winter as well as i just close the back door and if it gets too cold turn on the engine.
