I can't see me bothering to heat treat an old garden fork. If I had a big gas forge I'd consider it but not with my set up.

The repair is far from urgent as I have the old MOD fork to use for now but if that breaks then I'm stuffed.

Use quite a bit of oak at work, so will often use that if its straight grained.
For things like forks or shovels strength is more important whereas for a tool thats used for impact of somekind (axes/hammers) something a bit more springy is preferable.
