My Indigenous boys used uncured skins. Threw them away when the new skins were dry and ready. Each went through maybe 3 skins a year.
Cost them nothing. In those days nobody ( except the odd German tourist on a nostalgic trip) wanted them. Or the meat. The antlers were what was worth a bit, sold to China so the men could overpopulate their country.
