Talent is especially lacking with me I'm afraid when it comes to making things. loads of admiration for those that have the skill and patients to produce such fine things be it for commercial ends or personal use.

That's all very well if you've got the space and the tools. ;)
Yes i know what you mean. Its one of those conundrums once you have found the space and equipment to do it, you realise that you could have done it just as well with far less - hang on - isnt that one of Mors lines.

Incidentally I really dont agree with the ' I'm useless at that sort of thing' line. If i can - ANYBODY can.

All my knives get hard use, I have no problems battering the back of my woodie to split logs... that's what it's designed to do. Anyone I have been out with can see I'd rather break it than have it sat in a drawer.

I have no problem with people collecting them, you'd be mad not to see they're a collectable item... Just because we use 'em doesn't make us "right". When Alan Wood stops making knives (or any top maker) it is nice to know that examples of their craft will survive thanks to more careful folk, not the likes of us :lmao:

I think its more about being aware your own limitations. My many attempts at DIY are testament to mine :yikes: although it rarely stops me having a go.

£500 for any knife is insane.

I have couple of custom knifes which I paid big money for, but I find myself obsessing about not scratching them and tend polish them rather than use them etc etc. The knife I use the most is my mora that I bought for £5.99. Get a mora, and a leather neck sheath and steel for about £20 and your away.

There are plenty of custom makers out there who will make you a knife that rivals the woodlore for alot less money. Personally I think all the woodlore gear is massively overpriced!

I've been watching this on ebay: -

A USED Ray Mears Wilkinson Sword knife with new Woodlore sheath at £475

I'd love to have a couple of these tucked away for a rainy day!

I have grown up using tools from a very early age and my motto is: -

“Buy the best you can afford - dependant how often you will use or rely on it. Use it and use it hard then look after it as best you can.”

At those prices, you really have to wonder how good of an investment they are. But who knows, the price could even double. Some day they may be worth as much as a Playstation 3. :D

Well,

I had a friend who watched three series of Mr. Mears, bought a woodlore knife for a silly price after telling me that the mora I offered him looked 'nasty',

We then trundled off to the woods, whereby he almost lost the top of this thumb trying to use a flint and steel, failed to make a fire, got all grumpy and hasn't been out since, the knife currently sits in his desk draw where it has for months! Now that is annoying. He won't sell due to this stupid supply and demand scenerio we have going on at the moment with these knives.

I wander how many people of have done the same, watched abit of Ray bought a load of his 'endorsed' gear, feeling that it would endow them with his qualities? I wander what his take on all this would be?

Oh, completely off topic, I would love to have a go at making my own longbow, do you know of anycourses, days etc that could accomodate this?

Cheers guys.

P.S When is the PS3 actually coming out, it keeps getting put back? In time for April 2007??
