Ray Mears Books and Canada

  • Come along to the amazing Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
Firstly welcome to the site, good to hear from you ! It must be nice living in Canada, I've been to the west side (Banff & Jasper) and loved it.

About the book, do you have Nothern Bushcraft by Mors ? I feel this would be more suitable for you.

All the best

If you are wanting to gain bushcraft knowledge then I would opt for his first book, The Survival Handbook. Essential Bushcraft would come in second place although i don't know if it would be entirely relelvant to Canada. Mors Kochanskis' books and DVDs would be my choice if I was Canada based.

BV, Yes I do have Mors Kochanski's Northern Bushcraft, and it is excellent. Western Canada is nice. My brother lives in the interior of British Columbia, and can literally step outside and be in wilderness, although that wilderness also comes with local Mountain Lions, and Grizzly Bears! Here in Southern Ontario to get into any true wilderness one has to drive 3-4 hours north on the equivalent of your M1, mostly urban sprawl here with lots of farmland...
Spam, I'll likely try Rays Survival Handbook then...I was unaware Mors had DVDs out. Thats good news. Thanks for the info.
Cheers
Alex

I'd agree generally with Spamel. Outdoor Survival Handbook is a good all round book, though I'd be inclined to say that it leans towards to the British countryside. Essential Bushcraft has on the front cover "a handbook of survival skills from around the world" so incorporates information about more extreme terrain and conditions that we have over here (e.g. deserts to snow)...so I'd personally suggest that this may be better for you! However, both are good books.

You may also want to have a look at this web site: The 10 Bushcraft Books. It seems to be more jungle orientated, but it is packed with information. It is an on-line copy of an out of print text that derives from experiences during WWII. Just discovered that you can now download it as PDF files. :)

It would be nice if Mors bought along some of his DVD's to the next bushmoot, would be great to get a signed copy off the man himself:)

The Survival Handbook is his first book, the green hardback book. Very rare and expensive but packed full of information. The reason it isn't being re-published is because Ray doesn't want it re-publishing! Dunno why, but that is what he told me in Leeds. Mine is signed by Ray!

I hope it's good 'cos I've just bought it!!

Are all the same book. The green covered book, which I cannot find a picture of (apart from the polish version of the book!) is the expensive one and his best IMO. Saying that, you will see a definite change in his tools. The methods and techniques are the same.

Essential bushcraft is a damned fine book and contains many of the poictures used on his recent tour.
