Ive just bought a bag of "natural garden raffia" from Wilkinsons for 1.29 seems okay to practise natural cordage skills on a cold night ive plaited a length and it seems quite strong . I know I should forage my own but it seems a good way to learn. :)

Try stipping it down quite finely then making spun and laid cordage too. It's good stuff to practice on, cheap to buy and makes stuff you can actually use too.

You will have a lot of fun with that. This raffia cordage held 25 lbs, but popped at 35.

I have had some success with raffia as well - though I still prefer willow or nettle fibres. Still, when the sap is down and the nettles not available raffia makes a source of natural fibre that is easy (and cheap) to get hold of, is great to practice on and is eco friendly. Get it in various colours and you can make some very atractive cords!
