I've fancied getting a down bag for ages, and I've been finding that my Ajungilak Kompact 3-season is just too darn warm half the time, so I went out last week and bought myself a birthday treat - a Rab Quantum 200. This is a very minimalist bag, weighing in at 480g, and it packs down nice and small:

That's a '58 waterbottle and mug on the left, and a hammock / mozzie net in a 8L drybag on the right.

As I said, it's a minimalist bag - no zip, no neck baffle, no clever little gimmicks at all. It's also got a very narrow profile, so don't buy one without trying it on first!

I used it in my hammock overnight up in the Pentlands on Wednesday last week (first overnight for the new hammock / basha rig :)) and it did the job just fine. I'm not sure what the temperatures actually were, but I think the forecast was for about 6 deg C down at sea level, and I was perfectly comfy up at about 400m - although I was wearing socks, longjohns and a merino longsleeve top.

All in all, a great little bag if your looking for something compact and lightweight for the warmer months. However, because of the narrow fit you should definitely try one on before buying.

Have fun with the bag. Certainly now that the weather seems to be warming up (erm, apart from the rain today :)) it should get lots of use!

I almost got a Quantum 400, but ended up with a Nanok (because Outdoorcode doesn't sell Rab!) - hopefully I've made the right decision!

I got the 300 version in the Cotswold Outdoor sale for £50 !
bought 4 down bags (2 x 2/3 season, 4 season plus this one) and saved a bundle - then spent it on other neccerssary stuff :o

Bargain bags though

Right place, right time Greg ;) I was pleased though !!!

Touchwoods Spacemonkey, reopening as Go Outdoors. Most of the sale stuff is gone now. The new shop has some strange discount card, you pay £4 per year to get a card and then get money off your purchases. Never heard of paying to get a discount card though...

Yeah, That's it... I suppose the £4 is worth it on biggy purchases. The sale stuff was mainly the normal card discount prices, and it wasn't too bad. I would have saved the card price on the two trangia burners alone.

I have a Rab Quantum bag. i use it almost year round when it gets colder i use a silk liner. Only in the depths of winter have i needed a warmer bag then i get out the 4 season Rab bag.

The design and build quality of Rab bags are great. I wouldn't consider buying a bag from another manufacturer these days. I have used most makes of bag in the past and only Rab have really impressed me.

Here is the Rab Quantum 400 endurance packed in it's stuff bag with a 58 bottle for a size comparison. Also displayed is a Pre Mac Travel Well. This all in one water filter/purifier is rated for 60-120 litres, but with a bit of foam over the pre filter life has been easily extended to over 250 litres. The filter costs about £25 and is disposable. Takes 1min 20 secs to fill a 58 mug.
