After (temporarily) satisfying our thirst for new kit, on friday afternoon Rob_beek and myself set out for on an overnight stay at our secret location to try it all out. He'd bought a 58 pattern sleeping bag and I'd got some gloves, which I'll review briefly in a separate thread.
We used the remaining daylight to collect dead standing wood then got busy
sawing
and
splitting
in no time we had a nice little
fire,
a nice pile of
logs
and a good supply of
split wood
after some
batoning.
Once all that was out of the way we settled down to a nice cold
beer
and some delicious fire-cooked
sausages
before setting up our
tarps and beds
for the night, which was really clear with a huge bright full moon all night.
It was a beautiful morning when I got up and Bob was obviously liking his sleeping bag because, as you can just see in the background there, he was having a
lie in.
But I soon got him up and busy
making feathersticks
while I went off and collected and sorted dry twigs, and soon we had prepared three
different sizes of firewood
which, with the aid of a handful of birch bark, got the
fire
going with no problems, and Bob wasted no time in preparing a
slap up breakfast
for himself and a
nice hot brew
for me using our home made
pot hanger,
after which he washed up using his all natural
bushcraft scouring pad.........
or spruce needles to the common man.
By that time we were ready for home so we spent an hour making sure we had the place nice and tidy and
just as we found it.
Then a leisurely stroll back to the car with a few stops to admire
the view
and to pick up
other people's litter
Had a bit of trouble getting into the car when we got back to it as I had stupidly left the interior light on and run the battery flat and neither of us had any battery left on our mobiles but luckily a mate turned up just as we got there and he lent us his phone and we got it sorted after much phoning, and bob's girlfriend Lorna came to help out with a warm car and her mobile, then a very helpful AA man saved the day.
hope you enjoy the pics as much as we enjoyed our night under the stars.
