its very unlikely i'll get to a supplier to pick one out myself, so i'm buying blind.

not too happy about that but hopefully it'll be ok.

it wont be under very heavy use but I obviously want it to last.

my question is gb or wetterlings, or is there someone else i should be looking at?

its the small splitting axe from wetterlings that i'm most likely to go for, but i bought a friend the gb smaller splitter as a wedding prez a few years back and it seemed pretty tasty.

thanks in advance :)

If you can't get to choose one yourself it is always good to go with a recommendation and you could do worse than to give Lurch on here a shout. He gives great service and has a good background of knowledge;)

as usual - no affiliation, just a happy customer etc etc etc......

Wouldn`t you get the same effect from a cheap small hatchet from somewhere like B&Q ?
I thought a splitter just had a thicker head ?

I`ve never owned one though so I might be talking nonsense fella

[just thought i'd stick a line or two on this so people searching for advice (like i was) will find it]

thanks for the replies - went for the gb small splitting axe (cheapest i could find was from woodlore) at £61 delivered.
My only very minor issue is that it has the ray mears logo on it instead of the gb, which i dont particularly like....doubt it'll be too visible for long though

i think its actually a light sabre with an axe wrapped around it, i've chopped up enough logs in my life - as a school kid my saturday job was splitting logs through the winter - and i've never enjoyed it as much as i do with this thing.....

i'm sue the other brands are great, i'll most likely never know because if this axe was pinched i'd buy another in a blink of an eye. its bloody great :)

I really don't know anyone with a better collection of axes and knowledge than British Red.
I would think that if you PM him that you'll get some good advice ;)
