Darkest Scotland,
Basically I'm tarting up a cheap axe head I have and I'm just curious regarding the shape of it compared with a GB axe head

Why do the Gb axes have the flat top edge and the semi circular lumps either side of the haft on the bottom?

I'm guessing the flat top edge is to do with making it easier to carve with or something.

Do they serve a purpose ? Should I try and modify my axe head to match.

I always understood the semi circular lump's to be to strengthen the attachment of haft and axe head, so its less likely to snap off when your using it. They must of discovered it many years ago as its seen even on archealogical example's of northern axe's. I dont think its decorative for its own sake
