I've had this leftover piece of 20mm plastic waste pipe on the 'might be useful shelf' for some time now since getting some to repair an internal frame pack and with the wife on a use it or lose it cleaning purge today finally had an idea what to do with it.

I'd have a go at a Flute this afternoon to keep me out of mischief :)

Bearing in mind I haven’t so much as touched a Recorder since I was eight years old Flutopedia.com was a really useful web site to find. It's got online calculator that takes most of the guesswork out where to make holes and how big they should be etc for desired results. Plus beginners tunes and covers the basics of this finger goes here sort of thing, just what I need.

I say most of the guesswork, at the moment my first attempt sounds somewhere between rusty swinging gate and nails down a blackboard. Did think about putting a video link but the wife's threatened to murder me if I try playing it again today.

I've made a couple of side-blown flutes.

Be really, really pedantic about smoothing the finger holes. It only takes a tiny bit of air to escape to ruin the sound.

I added a second layer a bit like yours over the blow hole, then at the side that I blow against I very slightly angled the hole edge, so it was angled towards me. Again, smooth the edges very carefully.
