Purification of water by boiling in a beer bottle.

Hi,

I was out for a wander today and was quite thirsty so decided to get a drink from a stream in the forest. I wasnt going to drink the water straight from the stream and risk an upset stomach so had to boil it.

Thanks for that mate, very useful, imo you can use a dirty beer bottle as boiling will as kill filth in the bottle and also in the water, it's win, win.

Good report, thanks! I'd be tempted to use a beer can instead as less risk of it cracking but if a bottle is all you have then nice to see it can be used

But, unlike the beer can, the bottle doesn't have a plastic lining.

Boiling may kill the pathogens, but how would you remove any possible chemical or pesticide residues ?

You can use a plastic bottle to boil the water in as well if you dont have anything else. The plastic wont melt even with the flames licking it.

I've seen first hand water boiled in a re-sealable freezer bag. Just put it onto the embers and the water keeps the plastic cool enough not to melt. I couldn't believe it until I saw it, in fact it was Smarty on here that showed me at the first Cornwal RV that he started.

the bottle shouldn’t crack if there is still water in the bottle, works the same way as a paper frying pan.

Get a paper plate,news paper, origami bowl a cardboard basket whatever and cover with fat or oil, totally saturated it until it becomes almost translucent ,chuck on an egg and cook slowly over a low flame. The fat works as a thermal conductor and transfers the heat strait through the paper to the egg.
Ps Don’t hang around too long,Like I wouldn’t recommend chips..
