Punkie Dope

Just reading Woodcraft and camping by George Washington Sears,
When I came across his homemade bug repellent he calls "Punkie Dope".
Its a combination of pine tar, castor oil & pennyroyal oil. Has anyone else come across and tried this stuff before?
Wondered if its been tried and tested or if its something worth recreating and trying?

What you suggest is exactly what Xylaria and Woodstock have done with their Stupidly Simple things, it seems to me; their range combines all the best elements of the various old recipes from a wide variety of different sources, and they certainly work for me.
