printable maps?

I have an idea bubbling in back of my mind to print some fine detail maps off and then annotate/jot notes on the back of resources etc.
but I cant find any free maps of the area in a detailed enough scale to make it worthwhile.
I have a back up plan but itd be nice to follow the original idea through if possible.

anyone know where i can get hold of some?

Must admit to doing the same with a couple of OS maps of the local area which is up on the wall in the loft. (I kind've pinched the idea from Les Hiddens the Bush Tucker Man whos job it was was to do the same for the Austrailian army.)
I also have OS mapping software on the 'puter which allows me to anotate in layers. This means you can bring up reasources by type. You can also attatch photofiles to waypoints as a ref point.
Also the mapping software is printable and compatable with most GPS units allowing info and waypoints to be swapped back and forth.

Sent via smoke-signal from a woodland in Scotland.

I initially trained as a hydrographer/ cartographer and I would always advocate that people annotate and add their own information to maps. These additions will end up by giving you a unique and usage map containing your own relevant information. Nowadays you can get encapsulated maps that are easy to annotate with lumocolour or chinagraph pens. You can rub any annotations off with a bit of meths.
Otherwise you can use the OS mapping software and print off the areas you're interested in, laminate them and annotate at will.
