I am after a pouch to put my phone and/or GPS in that will mount on the shoulder strap of my rucksack.

Looked around and found some great pouches BUT the shoulder straps on my rucksack (Osprey Manta) are sewn on and i will not be able to mount a pouch that has a slide on system.

I've tried a few cheapo phone pouches with these plastic clips but they're useless, so think a decent vercro strap might be the only way.

So has anyone come across anything they think might work please?

Aye i saw the similar thread but to be honest i didn't want to hi-jack it.

Thanks for the links, as is often the case while searching for info on the stuff in your links it took me to others options, which in turn took me to others.

I found a company called KRNKY in Finland that seem to specialise in bags and kit for cycle couriers.
Their stuff looks pretty subtle and seems to have a good reputation, so i've ordered one of these

Topknot made me a horizontal sheath for a sak farmer, this style also lends itself to vertical carry on a shoulder strap. Andy could maybe do you a custom sheath.

I like that, a lot. Trying to find somewhere more local than Finland to get one though! :D
EDIT: No luck - €38 inc. P&P is sadly more than I'm willing to pay :-/

If the strap systems at all like the one in this thread
http://www.jungletraining.com/forums/showthread.php?p=57572
it looks like the only thing stopping you using a slip on pouch is two lines of stitches holding the strap retainers on which would be 5 mins work to slice through and sew again, if you actually wanted the retainers on.

My apologies if its a different sort of strap you have and I'm talking carp!

Just an idea but has anyone phoned Aiguille Alpine in Stavely near Kendal to see if they could make something. They make and sell rucksacks, pouches, bags, canoeing stuff, etc. on their premises. I got a custom sack in XXXLong from them. They have all the bits and kit to make exactly what you need I reckon and you might be able pursuade them to make something up to your own design.

Not sure but I reckon there can be no harm in contacting them.

Aye it is a bit pricey, hopefully they'll be well made and fit just right, fingers crossed.

Thanks Tom,

Yep my rucksack is pretty much identical apart from having a slightly larger pocket.
Unfortunately my sewing is not really up to much, i wouldn't even sew up a pair of socks never mind my rucksack :D

Thanks guys,

Ne'er mind, probably best not start chopping then ;-{D)
Does your bag have the loops for the drinks tube to fit under? You could always use something like this

held on with one of these

http://www.maxpedition.com/store/pc/3-TacTie®-Pack-of-4-34p351.htm

Ok a bit dear but it is solid stuff. I've used Arktis slide on pouches on pack straps for many years and they are really handy and have never got in the way.

Yep it does have the drink loops, i have a couple of small max ped pouches and a few of those tactie things, in theory they're great, in practice though the pouch just ends up flapping about and driving you crazy.

To make matters worse those loop things are elasticated so even if you strap it up very tight it still flaps around.

It wouldn't be too bad if the belt strap pockets were better placed on the Manta, as it is they're right back closer to your bum than your hips, so it makes getting anything in or out a right battle.

Because my left arm is paralysed i can't even use the left hip pocket as i just cannot reach around far enough to get to it.

Pretty much the only thing i'm not happy with the rucksack though, so if i need to throw a few quid extra at it to get it right for me then so be it.

This? http://www.lansdaleltd.com/products...ture-68530-small-digital-slim-phone-case.html

You can get one from most outdoor stores and it has a velcro wrap around system that allows it to be fixed vertically to a vertical strap, or it can be worn horizontally on a belt. I have one affixed to my rucksack strap.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I can't find any measurements on that pouch, but from the looks of it i am pretty sure my phone will not fit in it (HTC Desire HD).

It will also need to have velcro loops as my rucksack shoulder straps are sewn on.

Well the pouches arrived today.

The phone pouch is EXACTLY the right size for my phone (HTC Desire HD).

The main strap looks to be made out of similar material to seat belts, it then has the rucksack shoulder strap loops sewn onto this main strap.

IMG_0889.jpg

I like this design as when it is mounted, by pulling the main strap you effectively are lifting the phone out making it easier to access.
Unfortunately though this also means that when you reinsert the phone you have to hold the main strap or you end up pushing it through.

IMG_0892.jpg

In practice though even though i have the use of 1 arm it's easy to insert and remove the phone.
Ohh did i say the phone fits perfectly :naughty:

The other larger pouch is more the typical style of a pouch with the straps sewn onto it.

IMG_0895.jpg

It comes with a clasp and has velcro on the flap so is VERY secure

IMG_0896.jpg

The pouch is around 1 and 1/2 times bigger than the phone pouch, so you have room for a large phone plus some other smaller extras if need be.

IMG_0901.jpg

For me it's a bit of a weird size as it's too big for just my GPS (Garmin Edge 705) but it's too small to really fit anything else in like my monoculars (Docter 8x21) so i'm really going to have to go through my stuff to see what fits either on it's own or with something else to give a snug fit.

On the Rucksack i have the phone pouch mounted above the chest strap, and it stayed solid during todays 3 hour hike.
The bigger pouch i have 1 strap above the chest strap and 1 below it, this again was mounted solidly with no flapping about.

Took this pic but it gives a false sense of when the pouches are located when wearing the pack.

IMG_0880.jpg

This one gives a better idea.

IMG_0881.jpg

In use the phone pouch is in the area between your pectoral muscle and your collar bone, the bigger pouch slightly lower.

Over all i'm happy with them though, they really do feel great quality wise, the phone pouch is pretty much perfect for my phone and i'll be buying a new GPS soon that's bigger than my 705, so fingers crossed this one will fit and fit firmly.

Cheers
Mark
