Rapidboy was experimenting with the US Army poncho and how well it fared when used as a hootchie, pm him for his thoughts..

The older 58 pattern British Army poncho is very heavy, but very tough...

I've got the US army one too, very light weight and packs down really small.... I don't use it as a poncho though but it's pretty big.
I mainly use it as an extension to my hootchi if i need a bit extra space or sleeping 2 under it.
With the press studs on it, it fits in perfectly with my hootchi (mine is one from SASS, not sure if their's press studs on the other hootchi's)

I use two US army ponchos and their great. They are very lightweight, but do work. The reason I use two is so that a companion can stay dry in a sudden downpour too, and they popper together to make a decent size basha shelter, which they do just fine. They roll up quite small in their own stuff sack and cost about £15 each for the OG ones.

Bam.

Oh and you can get them all over Ebay...think that's were mine came from...

Nice BamboDoggy ;)
Yep, Ebay is where mine was from too, with a poncho liner..

There must be some online shops selling them though, i'll have a look and see if i come across any. (anyone else like me, have a favourites folder like "Favourites / bushcraft / shops / " with about 25 online stores in there? ;) )

( few in thrre, not sure if it's authentic though )

( one on ebay.. not sure though )

( looks ok, but has that special word "military STYLE" hmmm. )

That's enough for now?
Btw, I don't endorse any of those above, some were straight from Google, so shop at your own risk.

cheers

How is the quality of the US gear? Because I got a US 1litre water bottle and I'm far from impressed - if you do it up tightly the top of the cap peels off and if you dont do it up tightly it leaks a little. The lining of the "pocket" for it is good, but it's a bit awkward to put in and out.

I'd prefer a lightweight British army one - if they exist - so I'm hoping to find one at Becketts where I can try it on.

I use the two USGI ponchos that were issued. They are the lite weight ripstop nylon in woodland camo. I carry two because they are designed to snap together and form a shelter and sometimes wifey comes along.

I carry the issue liner for sleep purposes, but have also picked up a S. American made llama wool poncho for $19.99US from a local vender at the farmers market. Colorful and warm. :D

I have what was described as a US Army Poncho from...

www.surplusandadventure.com

It is very light and keeps the water out but seems a little flimsy which makes me suspect that maybe it isnt the US Army Poncho which is actually issued to troops?

The British 58 Poncho is very tough, very waterproof and very very heavy.

I've seen an Australian Army Poncho (Magikelly's) which was much tougher than the US one but just as light.

Are you sure you have the genuine article? My US water bottle has never leaked and i've had it for ages. They are very strong. I'm just a bit suprised that A real one would leak like you say if you do it up too tightly.

Regarding the poncho, I would love to get my hands on a "Clint" blanket, but I use the US poncho too. Far more compactable than the british and much lighter. It doesn't make you sweat quite as much as the British, but may not be as strong.
There is a lightweight British Basha, if it is only for that type of use.

Julian.

I went into Hoopers today and found the lightweight traditional British poncho/basha. It isn't as lightweight as it could be, but it isn't too heavy. How does the US one hold up as a basha?

The US one use its eyelets to hold up the poncho when you want to use it as a basha. There are 8 eyelets I think. Then all you have to do is to tie up the hood with a bit of para cord or some decent string.
Julian.
