Cool, thanks. Will get one ordered as I found it was the real weak point in wearing my bergen.

When I went Interrailing with it, I used to hide a wallet behind the side pouches. Temptation is to take too much as it's so capacious, though.

Just dug my bergen out of the loft - it's a lot smaller than I remember (how do I tell if it's the long or short back version?). Waist straps are 38mm so ordering a 40mm Bergbuckle (from Jackson Sports) - not as tightly sewn as I thought it would be either so shouldn't be difficult in sewing a new one on

On the long back, the 2 molle webbing strips that run down the front of the bergen, are very close to the front pocket, where as on the short back there is several inches between them. Also at the back, the shoulder straps are connected to the 4th segment of back padding (counting from the bottom up) & the long back's straps are on the 5 th.( difficult to tell on some bergens as the bottom half may have vertical padding)
There is also a label on the underside of the lid telling you which, ( may be missing with time) & the overall shape too, will tell you, if it's short & squat or long & thin

The internal aluminium vertical stays on the long back are around 53 cm long so if they are shorter, you have a short back

Can't find a label anywhere in mine but the description fits the long back type. Buckle ordered (along with some other stuff - cheap quickdraw for hanging hammock & a sling for same - couldn't resist!!)

You won't need to sew the bergbuckle on. It adjusts from both sides. Just fit and go.

He will have to sew as there wont be enough webbing on one side of the belt ( the side that holds the female part of the buckle) to thread through & hold the new buckle on.
Also the end of the belt is folded the wrong way to be pulled when tightening the waist belt.

There is enough webbing, just. I'll sew it anyway, I think. Not sure what you mean about the belt being folded the wrong way - it works fine at the moment. Will post pictures later

The belt is folded towards the reverse side (facing the wearer) whereas, for use with a dual adjust buckle the end should be folded towards the outside so as to be able to pulled ( at the same time as the other side) when tightening the waist belt.
I'm surprised you say there is enough webbing to thread through,as usually there is only a few inches fold over, which would make it difficult to keep the buckle central & to keep it in place, plus having enough webbing to pull the buckle tight as, idealy, you need the same amount of webbing to pull on both sides.

Sorry I can't be clearer, difficult to describe in words.

I see what you're saying. Once I'd unstitched the belt it wasn't that obvious which way it had been folded. There isn't a lot to play with, certainly but it seems to hold OK:
