Im sure some people have seen my rant about pictures missing from tutorials on here, after they have been moved or deleted on photobucket or wherever. I know this is'nt the fault of BCUK, but it does affect what info is available when people search. Its a shame to see such a resource as this with half complete posts.

Is there anyway that it can be rectified, pehaps by have storage on the BCUK server?
I know everything costs money, but is it possible?

I have no idea why people remove pictures from their hosting accounts, I've not removed one from my PB account that I'm aware of. I did a tutorial on sleeping in blankets and basic use of a knife. If I removed the pictures, the posts would be worthless. Surely, as it is a free service, you could open up an account for one thing and another account for another.

Storing pictures on the BCUK server is only possible (as far as I know) by using the Gallery:
http://www.bushcraftuk.com/index.php/Gallery.html

Drawback on using the gallery for say tutorials is the amount of storage space that's available for each member, which can become tres petit if you're a picture-enthusiast tutorial maker ;)

Though, good tutorials / reviews with pictures are more than welcome for placement on the frontpage. In that case pictures will be stored on the BCUK server.

Other than that: it's up to each member whether or not they break the code between the tutorial and their online hosting accounts (PhotoBucket, etc.).

But its a real shame that all that info has been buggered up, all because of the missing pix. It seems that new people asking the same old questions bugs the hell out of others on here. People are advised to use the search function, only to come up with info lacking
the vital pix. Im only raising this because i give a stuff, and think that it should be addressed. I dont see as it can take up that much server space hosting pix for topics and tutorials, at least then theres a permanent copy.

So, is this a case of nothing will be done then?

If thats the case then theres loads of posts and tutorials that are no longer any help and should be deleted. Before i get flamed, i *do* respect the hard work people put into posts and running the site,. As i said before though, im raising this because i like this place, and it should be the best feckin bushcraft site/resource on the net!!!

Why not list a few tutorials Andy where you ahve found this problem.

I suspect some of them might be mine. Several years ago I used "free" hosting which timed out after 2 years.

I now use a pro hosting service since I want to maintain my work - but I might need to re-link to a few older tutorials

I feel your pain! There is no way of stopping people from deleting their pictures, although they perhaps didn't either know or think about this when they did delete them. By raising this issue, you may well have minimised this in the future. Hopefully, folk will take note and not delete their pictures from their photo accounts in future and we will have continuity in older threads. Is there a way we can get a bushcraftuk type email address? That way, we can all open a hosting account in that name and then use it only for BcUK. Just a thought.

i'll have a look through again.

I was specifically searching for bushcraft fishing, prehistoric fishing and anything to do with making abo fishing kits, as well as making nettle cordage for the same said kit.
Also, a recent one where i've found buggered up posts has been to do with birch craft, boxes and containers. Lots of posts saying "look at my work" or "do it like this" but the pictures are now missing. Very frustrating.

On the plus side though it makes me use my brain and learn things from scratch!! ;)

If you open a free blog at www.blogger.com, you get tons of free, indefinite photo storage. BCUK shouldn't become a media storage service - just link to your images.

Cheers

Your missing the point!

BCUK has, in my opinion been one of the best archives of bushcraft information, with the most knowledgeable people around. Over the years theres been some excellent and very informative posts. I would like to see that any newbies on here can access that information. Im not suggesting that BCUK becomes photobucket or whatever, just that
the info is available in its entirety!!!

Seems sensible to me

As long as you have a limit on the size and format of the pix being uploaded to the BCUK server, there should be no problems with eating space, and there will be no hassle when the "free" photo service goes under.....

Im sure there are others that get my point?

I suppose what I didn't mention was that Blogger has been unavailable maybe twice in the last 5 years. My point was that you can use a reliable photo hosting company whose specialty is hosting content - Google (who owns Blogger) spends a lot of money and has a lot of resources dedicated to this - and then you can allow BCUK to do what it does well, and not try to overtax their resources. Unlike Photobucket, the images you put on Blogger (or picasaweb.google.com, another hosting product from Google) won't go away.
