I think the men and their gadgets is a factor
living on a small island the coast is always at my door, I've had a fair deal of luck catching and Pollock, Mackerel, and even a couple of Bass with this wonderful little rig!
granted not designed for beach fishing but it's been great to have in my bag when I've been for a wander around the coast!
Fishing with a stick is no different than fishing with an expensive carbon whip. Neither give line, yet a whip is deemed acceptable.
A stick is good enough. You're tackle should be scaled in order to be sufficient in landing your target species.
Whips have elastic in them to help play the fish, a line tied to a stick has a lot less give and is more likely to snap leaving your fish trailing a stick and nylon ready to get tangled up in any features and kill the fish.
