Thanks for the comments guys. Tengu, I would have left it as is, but it just wasn't functional as you couldn't carry it properly and was really uncomfortable when loaded. I know it's an old bit of kit but there's still plenty of them around so I didn't really see it as destroying a nice vintage item, more improving it so it's fit for purpose.
