Friend can get one of these, cheap. Asked me if they are any good. Sadly asking the wrong person don’t use meths yet, if ever.

Anyone ever have one, how do they compare to others, if it worth him getting a trangia instead ?

Not used the Pathfinder myself, but my Trangia does all I've needed. Saying that, here's what Google has to say.

"The Pathfinder MK1 and Trangia alcohol stoves are both popular choices for backpacking and camping, but they differ in design, size, and fuel capacity. The Pathfinder MK1, with its larger capacity, offers longer burn times, while the Trangia is known for its quick and efficient heating. The Pathfinder's larger thermal mass takes longer to prime, while the Trangia's smaller size heats up faster, making it ideal for shorter cooking sessions.

Here's a more detailed comparison:

Pathfinder MK1:
  • Pros:
Larger fuel capacity leads to longer burn times, making it suitable for longer cooking sessions or larger meals.

  • Cons:
Priming takes longer due to the larger thermal mass of the stainless steel.
Trangia:
  • Pros: Faster heating, suitable for shorter cooking sessions and quick boils.
  • Cons: Smaller fuel capacity, may require more frequent refills for longer cooking. "

I had one for a while, as google points out it takes a lot longer to bloom than a trangia, but does have a longer burn time. The priming time can be accelerated by pouring alcohol into the rim and igniting it, but a trangia was still faster, more packable and provided more than enough burn time to cook simple meals. It also took longer to cool down after use.
