I made a staff and paddle a few years back, but never got around to posting.
The paddle I carved from a single plank of White Ash. Using mainly an SFA, a PB Bushman knife, a flat and convex spoke shave, and some sandpaper. Finished with BLO and on the blade, yacht varnish.
The Staff is made for fly fishing, wading rivers. A single piece of straightened Hazel, with two coats of yacht varnish. The handle is a chunk of Buffalo horn, sanded down with a disc sander, and a celtic salmon carved into it with an awl. The collar, is also buffalo horn. At the base there is an old plumbing pipe, with a lead roof tile wrapped inside to weigh it down. A rubber foot. A jubilee clip, covered in two layers of heatshrink. And some cord made into a lanyard.
Theyve both performed admirably.
I'd be interested to see your own home made paddles and staffs.
