Especially to an untooled amateur?!
If so, where might I be able to pick up a suitable piece of Steel?

Old saw blades are good. I don't think it's as critical as for some applications. I've got a load of 2mm steel shelving that I use

yes its simple to make more difficult to get the geomatry to work well

cromwells sell O1 flat stock i used to use 10mm x 1.5mm
