im not sure weather this has come up before but i was wondering what is the best oil to finish off birch with?. im looking for something that brings out the grain without it changing the colour of the wood too much. it doesnt really matter if its toxic or not as the spoon wont be used for eating with.

any thoughts?

thanks

hello.

tung oil and danish oil work quite well. I use a fair bit of danish oil myself on all sorts of hardwoods.

Flax seed oil is good and the colour change thing varys on how you oil it, if you use it by applying it with a rag you can judge how dark you want it, if you leave it in oil for a week it will go darker than David dickinson.

I normally soak smaller items as its easier, soak or wipe the oil on every 1/2 hour or so until the wood will not take anymore, wipe off the excess, leave 48 hrs or more for the oil to harden and buff with a clean rag.
wood now beautiful and shiney
