Was out doing a plant survey this morning with ma boy and suddenly realised we were standing next to a roe deer, and it wasn't interested in running off. Soon found out why, it had a fawn tagging along and it was tiny. Only caught a small glimpse of it as the stingers are now quite tall, but I did manage to get a shot of the adult.................Jon

Nice one Jon. :You_Rock_

I had a similar experience during the week. I was working on an area of heathland in Dorset when I heard this odd squeaky sort of bleeting coming from a gorse bush. I was still wondering what it was when a roe doe came rushing up to the bush at which point the penny dropped. I decided to leave well alone so no photos I'm afraid.

Your camera software should store all the information when you upload it to the computer - time date etc so you can turn off the date stamp (I am assuming it's digital). But they are BRILLIANT pics - keep a gallery please.

Thanks for that Rich, yes if you do a right click on a photo, you can see when it was taken, but I find it so useful to have a quick reference, esp ones of my kids growing up (to fast), that I like to leave it on. If I am really keen on a photo, I can always edit it.
I do have a gallery with a few in, must get round to uploading some more.
Cheers.................Jon

Hi Jon

What can i say stunning images, well done.

It amazes me that deer with fawns are so tolerant of disturbance but also they chose to stay near paths and other places they know people are likely to pass. I am a firm believer that man and animals have a subconscious connection and can sense the others intent and i am sure two proud parents with there offspring meeting enhances that connection.

Oh and yes that is a female pheasant.

Jon you can bin the date stamp on you images as all that information is embedded in a digital image called the EXIF data which you can look up.

Great pictures, Jon.

You mention right-clicking on a photo to see the date it was taken. You're probably seeing the EXIF tags. One this you might find useful, is to automatically process your pictures as you upload them to your computer.

For each photo, rotate to the correct orientation and create a white border around it, then take the EXIF data and embed that in the white border (things like date, f-stop, shutter speed, ISO equivalent setting).

Here is an example that I just wrote. As it stands, it is for the Gnome/Nautilus desktop environment. It requires the Exiftags and Image Magick packages.

I believe these two packages exist for MacOS and for Windows, but since I don't have any way of testing, I'll not attempt to write versions for these two other environments.

Code:
## exif-annotate
#
# takes a new-line delimited list of files
#
# loop through the list, for each file it
# adds a border to the image and in this
# border writes the date, f-stop and shutter speed
# read from the EXIF tags
#

#
for a in $NAUTILUS_SCRIPT_SELECTED_FILE_PATHS
do

	# read things from EXIF tags
	fstop=`exiftags $a | grep "F-Number" | cut -f2 -d":"`
	shutter=`exiftags $a | grep "Exposure Time" | cut -f2 -d":"`
	date=`exiftags $a | grep "Image Created" | cut -f2- -d":"`

	annotation="Shutter ${shutter}, Aperture ${fstop}, Date ${date}"

	# Add the annotation to the image
	convert $a -pointsize 72 label:"${annotation}"  \
		-background white -flop -append -flop $a

done

You could also add a comment, such as the place where you took the shot, while the info is still fresh in your mind.

Wow Jon ! They are some wonderful photographs. You're barred from the photo competition too ! They're truly great photos. Especially the Roe doe.
What happened to that by the way, are we still having one?
