Oak coppice

The explanation I heard about Pine Martins and greys v reds was that greys spend a bit more time on the ground than reds where the Pine Martins are better at catching them.
The martins eat whichever they can catch but the reds aren't as easy to catch.

I've read that as well and the fact the greys are bigger and can't escape to the ends of the branches.

The patch of woodland in question though is densely planted with dense canopies so the squirrels are very rarely seen on the ground now and can easily go long distances tree to tree. When I first bought it you would often see the squirrels on the ground and could pick the odd one off with a shotgun, not any more.

The planting density is quite common for new woodlands, and was stipulated as part of the grant, but I'm not convinced it's ideal for creating broad leaf woodland down here.
