Hello all,

I just recently order a bunch of brand new kit that should last me a pretty fair amount of time during my life. One of the items I ordered was a Grand Trunk Ultralight Hammock.

I love the hammock itself even though I have not been able to use it, but since it is breathable and it is very hot here atm it seems promising. My problem is that it never came with the tree hugging straps with it. My question for the hammock experts out there is what should I do now?

I would really love to be using it this weekend but I don't know what to do to replace the straps...

Thanks!

What suspension comes with the GT ? Can you pick up some 1.5" poly webbing from a hardware store nearby ?

With a couple of carabiners you could get simple system setup in no time, something like this ...

The suspension it comes with is a basic S hook on both ends of the hammock. I could very easily put a carabiner on each end though. So from that what should I do?

--Get yourself 2 polyester or polypropylene straps, 1'' or 1.5'' wide and about 5 foot long (longer if you are going to use them around big trees). Avoid nylon straps as they stretch. If you do not have any specialised shops near you and you can't wait to get them mai order, try automotive shops and see if they have the straps you use to secure loads on roof racks - some of them will do.
--Make sure that their breaking strength is about 1.5 times your body weight (this assumes that your hammock suspension is at 30 degrees, see hammock forums for pages and pages of explanations on this).
--Put a figure-of-eight loop on one end of each of the straps
--Put strap around tree, pull free end through loopon other end. Your strap is now secured around the tree with the free end coming through the loop.
--Take the free end and do a marling hitch with toggle - attach the S hook around the knot, not the toggle
Alternatively, put another fig-of-8 loop at the right distance and hook the S hook in that loop
--Enjoy, no extra hardware is needed :)
