well, they were not that obvious all the time when we orienteered back in the days.
Anyway, orienteering is excellent in practicing map and compass skills.
Geoc. is done using a GPS?
Both ways give useful skills.
I would say the not so obvious skill is how to choose your way in the wild, and to visualize the terrain using a map.
