'New Posts' query

Have been wondering for a while.... can anyone tell me the ctiteria that works out how many items appear in the 'new posts' list.

Initally i wondered if it was all posts that day but it dosn't seem to be standard

its new posts since you last logged in. and if you stay online a long time it up dates ever 10 mins or so.
