New Kuksa: Care & Cleaning?

I have not owned a kuksa before, but ordered one recently and it arrived today. I bought it through Amazon, of all places, from the Nordic Art Store. This one was made in Estonia, and was actually shipped to me directly from that country. I am very happy with the craftsmanship and the price.

Anyway, it appears to have a light oil finish of some sort. What do you recommend doing to it, if anything, before pouring my first cup of coffee?

As for cleanup after use, I remember reading somewhere that these should be rinsed after use, but not washed with detergent. How do the rest of you manage routine cleaning of your kuksas?

Thank you very much!

Hi Brent,

I washed mine with salty warm water when done and now just rinse with water. Just don't leave them in water for extended periods it can cause cracking or warping. You could also read HERE & HERE.

Hope you enjoy using it, I love mine and am indeed drinking a coffee from it now - with no alcohol as it's morning time here.

Thank, you GoatBoy. I appreciate the response, and particularly the most informative web links!

The kuksa I purchased is exactly like the Style IV "two finger" version shown on the Crimo Estonian Handcrafts. Mine does not smell like linseed oil, with which I am familiar, but some other light oil I can't identify. I expect I will wash it out with warm, salty water, as you suggest, and put it to use.

Thanks,

Brent
