Hi everyone, I’m Elowen from Los Angeles, USA.

I’ve come across this site many times and really like the community and all the shared outdoor knowledge, so I thought I’d sign up. I get out hiking and camping around California when I can, still picking up bushcraft skills as I go. I’m really into fire craft, putting together simple shelters and open‑fire cooking. Would be awesome to get some beginner pointers, and hear what people think of the UK Moots. Looking forward to chatting with you all. Cheers!

The Moots are great. There are a number of photo threads on here from past years. Why do you ask?

What opportunities are there for fire craft and open fire cooking in California? Much of what we hear makes California (especially the southern part) sound like a huge tinder box ravaged by wild fires. Even if there are no fire bans, I would imagine that the risk would have a dampening effect (pun intended) on lighting fires while camping.

It would be interesting to hear how you go about making open fires in such dry conditions. We could learn from you as our summers get hotter and dryer.

(We were considerably hotter than Vista a couple of weeks ago)

Yay Elowen! Welcome. Are you also a Prepper (joke), Hollywood seems to think all major disasters start or end in Los Angeles/California. And the UK Press don't help.

The UK Moots are great, small but beautifully put together, and a wealth of knowledge and experience, freely given.
