New BG Kit from Gerber

I have owned several Fiskars tools for years. They are often branded with other names ie Wilkinson Sword & Gerber. BG is just another.
All mine are 'normal' axes & hooks. The splitting axe I got most recently is a delight to use. All mine are pre 'X' series but it doesn't look like there is much difference

Anyone here seen 'The Walking Dead' and the BG branded 'tool toll' of Gerber machetes and such? Blatant product placement!

I might be in the market for a brushhook given all the brambles we have, but I oddly don't feel the need to get a 'zombie slaying' combination machete and brushhook.

I actually have something very similar to the hatchet they advertise, but it is Fiskars axe X7, and quite a handy little hatchet it is too. Many of the 'Gerber' tools I have found are more easily available at hardware stores, just branded Fiskars Finland instead. I think Fiskars have bought up Gerber, and Silva compasses too.

Very funny though and some clever marketing - if it gets people to spend, well you know how the saying goes; and fool and his money......

On the subject of branding and the associated opinions; I read a scathing comment concerning the RM Bushcraft knife which went something like:

"Overpriced Gucci kit for suburbanite bushcraft poseurs"

You pays your money...

Never understood the hate towards old Bear to be honest.

He's a clean living family man, does a lot for charity and has achieved so many things in his life to be proud of. 21 SAS, recovering from a back broken in 3 places, his martial arts ability as well as the huge amounts of time and kudos he gives to the scouting movement; desperately needed as we are at a point in Western society when some kids seem to leave the womb clutching a Nintendo DS.

In a world full of tattooed bed hopping 'celebrities' with gutter mouths and morals, I think the man deserves more slack than many give him.

If he can make a few pounds out of his tie ins, good luck to him.

Well said.

I'll admit to having a few niggles about the presentation of some of his stuff (and have you SEEN his bow drill video?), but I can't disagree with you there.

It is called "lying, cheating and misrepresentation" as I see it....
How can anyone who is so bad at the basics be taken seriously?

I'm not following with the 'lying cheating misrepresentation' thing?

Would you expand on it please?
His bow drill video - laughable
Leaping off cliffs into a river pretending he is only using the clothing he stands in but you can see his PFD through his wet shirt
Ab-ing off cliffs pretending he is not using a safety line
Wandering in "the wilderness - yards from his hotel
Sleeping in the wilds - the wilds of a hotel
Being attacked by a bear - bear-suit wearing camera crew
Building a raft on a desert island - from parts precut for him and it was in a holiday resort...
Have you watched his programs?
They are full of this stuff! I find it laughable that folk take him seriously.
Some folk think he is teaching real survival - it is about as real as "Transformers".
OK he is enthusing a lot of children to join Scouting ... but I think the porn star they had as a previous Chief Scout was a better role model!
At least he admitted to having been in dodgy movies....

IF the kit was without BG branding but came direct from GErber or whoever would the stuff be good at that price IF you needed that item? I.e. IF that item met your needs for functional grounds and in the case of bladed tools for fit in your hand and general handling? FWIW I hate gaudy colours too but I do like function. I'd go for function and value over form or branding. I would have thought we are all practically minded folk on here. Surely it is more practical to get a tool that is reasonably priced for the function needed that it meets? If a £300 second-hand RM knife off ebay is a better bet than a £40 knife from someone else that does the job as well then I guess branding works wonders. If it is a Gerber made BG knife that does the job of another bushcrafter knife costing more then the gerber/BG knife then personally if you get the more expensive knife that is not branded then branding doesn't work but prejudice does. I personally think what I've looked at out of the BG stuff it looks good for the price if a little garish. The craghoppers stuff is aimed at younger lads I think not BCUK's demographics anyway. FWIW I agree that the BG hating does get monotonous. He mis-represented the hotel carp a while ago, get over it and move on. Who is taking the **** out of RM for gucci knives??

I was watching a YouTube video where a guy was unwrapping his new RM Bushcraft and just quickly reviewing it. In the comments under the video some guy made that Gucci crack.

While not disagreeing with your points, it's more than a little black and white IMHO to put it as if he is a liar and a cheat.

It's television, that means it's not real. It's meant as entertainment and I think you'd need to be pretty uptight not to see that a lot of it is meant to convey an element of humour. The only way I can try and explain it is that almost everything you see on TV has an element of what I think you'd call fakery about it. I'm a helicopter pilot, and I have friends whom have been involved doing the airwork in many televison shows, from challenge annekka (remember that?) through to top gear, and all I can say is just run with it and enjoy it. It's not real, but it's as real as they can make it out to be while satisfying the insurers and the financial backers.

With the things he does that are obviously not faked - naked into a siberian river in fast flowing freezing water, some of the things he is willing to eat etc, well I think you'd have to be pretty hard of heart not to give the man kudos for that. You could have all the safety crew you want staanding nearby, it'd still not be me doing it.

He's not a chap you're going to find extolling the virtues of carving a spoon, ventile clothing, stag antler whistles and spending a week making a canoe. That's not his niche. His is the high testoserone approach, and fair play to him. There is room out there for everyone.

You could also argue he is more inclusive a personality, as lets face it, he could have put his signature on a £450 knife as well and it would have sold. He never, he's went for the mass market, get the job done part of the kit scene. Kit that teenagers can purchase and get a foothold in this hobby. Thats a positive for me.

All in, good luck to the guy. He's as worthy a role model for kids as any out there.

And on a chat show he once told the host that after a series filming he likes to go to his island off Wales I think and run about naked too. Something more to dislike about him too I suppose...the fact that he has a sense of humour about himself and doesn't take himself too seriously.

I've got nothing against the man, on the contrary but his show's suck, probably 'cause I take them too seriously
This BG gear looks to me like cheap tat, doesn't matter to me if it works or not, I ain't buying or using it nor do I ever wish to be seen with it....that's fine as no one is forcing me to,.........There is obviously a market for these objects but because I'm not part of that market should I condemn them ?....
The colour scheme is a little puzzling, the only reason I can find to explain it, is so that the would be BG survivalists can recognise each other at a distance :D

This video is hilarious, you've all seen it before but how can you not like the guy after seeing this......http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3UpSlpvb1is

I'm no fan of his shows but if I'm honest I'd prefer to watch him than most of the other pap on TV.

Les Stroud posted on the Bushcraft USA website, publicising his new range. Basically he said his stuff would be top quality (although you'll pay for it - lets hope not Woodlore prices!), unlike some others who are only in it for the money...........................

Not very classy, Les!. Like BG or hate him, his stuff is reasonably priced (important for the youngsters), decent quality if not tiop of the range, and he does more (for free) to get kids out into the outdoors than most.

indeed having seen the stuff Les will be putting out class is the least thing on his mind

I thought the BG stuff was fugly
