The same reason a lot of the merchant shipping companies band the discharging of waste at sea. The turtle are or were facing extinction, because they can’t tell the difference between jellyfish and plastic bags. Farmers have a similar problem with cows eating poly bags. I’ve also seen some X-ray pictures of bird pellets containing metal bird rings in them.
If you’ve never owend a dog you probably wouldn’t know or be familiar with the old two stick twisting trick to pull a bit of string out of a dogs A#$E.....
Essentially most animals are fairly stupid or at least ignorant of modern hazards in the environment ,Cadmium, Oil, Plastics ,Glass, just to mention a few and therefore it’s our responsibility to protect them, The Horseshoe crab must be the best example, we use its copper based blood to purify vaccines and blood products, but the crab is under threat of extinction in the wild from pollution, and mostly totally preventable domestic rubbish, if we are so short-sighted or stupid enough to let the crab die out in the wild then there’s no point complaining when we end up on the endangered list.
