Well after years of using knives, axes, hatchets without so much as a stitch in sight and thinking that I am proficient, nay invincible with sharp things, I have managed to embed my Scandinavian forest axe in my shin. Not to deep thankfully, but enough to upset swmbo and enough to frighten me. The moral of this tale is, always give plenty of thought as to where the sharp end of a tool could end up.

Andrew glad you lived to tell the tale.
Good advice for everyone because often when using these tools you can be on your own. Also everyone should take heed and ensure you have a first aid kit with you when using sharps, as this is a reminder they are not toys.
hope you recover quickly

Andrew,
last weekend I was splitting some kindling with my knife (something I have been doing for years!!) and managed to pick up 4 stitches and a small infection to boot. :(

Glad it wasn't too bad a wound. It acts as a timely reminder though to always have a First Aid kit to hand whenever using sharp things. :(

Thanks for the kind words all. I have been butchering carcases on a daily basis for the past 5 years & having not attained a stitch yet (due to diligent use of chain mail glove & apron) but fully expect to require serious stitches at some stage. Out in the woods though I don't wear chain mail or any other protective kit and an axe can do alot more damage than a boning knife so the advice about a first aid kit is good advice too.

I try to show my sharps the utmost respect but did not however give the potato peeler the same - it reminded me by peeling off the top of my middle finger yesterday :(

Guys, anyone here ever wonder if there's something seriously wrong with us, reminiscing about how badly we've sliced ourselves with sharp objects that we don't think twice about paying $300 for when they often end up sitting in a drawer? :D

Good grief! Did they manage to re-attach your tendons OK? I have a friend who had a similar accident, and the surgeons were unable to rejoin them, leaving him with a couple of unusable fingers :(

it went in at an angle more like a spear or arrow tip shape with the point inbetween the fingers, so somehow it missed all the tendons. Bled alot though. sorry to hear about your friend, I certainly counted my blessings as I'm a musician and to loose the use of any fingers would be devastating.

Ouch... really bad place for such a wound, I'm glad you still have full control over your fingers. Not only essential to your music, but also to grip firmly most objects.

Cheers,

Pleased it's not as bad as it could have been Andrew, sooner or later though we all catch ourselves out.
About three years ago when I was living/working in Scotland we used to use the workshop for Kenjitsu/Iai training at lunchtimes, on one occasion while using a 'live' blade' I had successfully completed a somwhat complex Kata feindishly devised by my Sensi for the first time and returned the sword to the saya then suddly realised my left hand was wet, on closer inspection it bcame apparent that I'd sliced a thin sliver of flesh from my left thumb. My fault entirely I was far to pleased with myself far to soon.
Cheers Tim
