My relative has a GSP and he gets cold in winter hillwalking and swimming etc. We are thinking of getting a neoprene jacket. Does anyone have experience of them - do they impair swimming ? Sticks/branches may get caught when swimming ? do they overheat ?

GSP's have very little fat and a thin coat - no undercoat/layer.

I have a gsp, don't have a coat for him, but he lives outside all year round, he does'nt like the water though, so no good as a canoe dog !

I had a GSP long, long ago in a galaxy far far away. But I never used anything on him so I really have no idea how effective or cumbersome they might be.

My GSP prefers the waxed cotton look....and leaves it to me to dry it if i'm not quick enough to remove it before he dives into water!!

Wonderful bird dogs but a bit hard headed when they want to be.

You got that right!!

They have a brilliant nature and are real people dogs but the best description is 'stubborn and sensitive' certainly until they are around 4yrs. Murphy is 9yrs old now and superbly behaved but he was hard work as a youngster :p

Stubborn indeed, mine how ever dislikes people, & is tolerant at best, i got him as 20 month old, & he'd had 3 homes before i got him, due to being a handful.

3 homes! Poor thing, I guess it's another case of people getting a working breed and then expecting the dog to be content being left all day with little or no exercise.

I used a neo coat on my English pointer and my springer when fowling. The pointer was a skinny wee thing that felt the cold, and the springer had the coat to cover her white body. I always took it off before sending on a retrieve.

They'd run through cover with it on but never got snagged. We got it from countrymun.

He was a so & so for running off, but then i found that he'd not been off the lead for 6 months due to this, but we got there in the end, had him 6yrs next month.

Hi,
My rescue Jack Russell (had him 12 months now) uses one. When I got him he was v thin + felt the cold - still does on the tops. Got him a neoprene coat and it works really well. Keeps him warm, no probs with snagging and it seems quite durable. When it gets clagged up with mud, I just put it into the machine on rinse + spin and it comes out fine. I'd recommend one.

Got mine from here - great service, very helpful staff + they can do a made to measure service if dog not a standard size. No affiliation etc, just a very happy customer. Just ordered a replacement one as he is no longer as skinny as he was!
