on another note there must be some kind of rabbit trap available
might not work out if there expensive (the money could go to a gun) but if you can get them cheapish its worth a go

its amazing what boredom will do to you :D

if you dont use ebay, primrose at £12.45 a go

The main problem with cage traps for rabbits at this time of year is getting them in there, there is so much food around for them at the moment that baiting the traps won't work. As has been mentioned you would need a lot of traps to catch just one rabbit.

Snares are a very efficent way of catching rabbits, setting the snare in the rabbit run means the rabbit brakes its own neck as they are moving at speed, if not they will try and make themselves invisable.

Surely a second hand air rifle is the way to go?
Or even blag a gun to borrow (do you still have your license?)
Try people with horses, the effects of rabbits (holes) in a field of horses can be catastrophic, they are the people most in need of rabbit control.
get loads of ground to shoot over and take a buddy to shoot and you work your dog, loads of people with guns find it hard to use all they shoot, so split the haul with em.....

Some good advice here, as people have mentioned, snaring is a very efficient way of catching rabbits. I was in a similar situation a while back and couldn[t afford another air rifle, so I started snaring and using a catty on pigeons, then traded some of my kills for an old air rifle which I then tarted up.

Since then i've traded meat for such things as a new fridge/freezer and tyres for my car!!!

Good luck

Dont forget long nets

you just rig a long net between the feeding bunnies and their holes just at dusk when they are all out to feed.... then you create a commotion and drive them into the net... a simple break of the neck later and you have your meal

IMHO, nobody could had to hunt for food himself and his dog here in Europe, it's a shame.
I would like to find any job for him but is'nt possible form here.
So, what if we collect any money for a carbine for learnin2hunt, I'm sure it's not more than some 30-40 euro each? I'll be the first.

tada! free meals for only £90 + pellets!
you shouldnt just be considering bunnies though. you can also take squirrel and pigeon with permission. decent country pubs that sell food should take rabbits and possibly pigeon, butchers probably would too, so you can probably easily fund pellets and ketchup! :D :D

good luck!

Spring snares would do the trick, however they are not legal in the UK unless you obtain ridiculous amounts of permission. If you need rabbits that badly, just snare them and put one hand on the back legs, one hand around the neck and pull taught in a swift motion.

If you don't like the squeeling, wear earplugs.

Snaring squirrels on branches or poles is not illegal in the UK. Spring snares are still used for rats too.

Fence snaring rabbits is the quickest way to kill them but you run the risk of catching other animals and birds too, if snaring on fence lines get some 4ply snares of brass, same as the ones for squirrels.
