Need a bit of advise concerning 2 water bottles I have

I have two cheap aluminium waterbottles that have a coating on the inside; this seems to now be flaking off slowly and in bits.

Do you think they are still safe to use?

Nope - I'd google for a way to remove the lining and then they'll be OK for water (but not for acidic drinks)

would putting a couple of ball bearings or half a hand full of gravel in and giving a good shake get the lining out?

Before I realised it was the lining I thought it was just gunk so i tried vinegar and dried rice (spereratly) and giave it a soak and a shake but nothing changed. May give Southey's suggestion ago before binning.

Don't bin 'em, turn them into stoves.
They work great for bigger pots and pans.
