Necker danger!

  • Come along to the amazing Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
My knife goes from the boot of the car to hanging off the back of my chair these days, easy access for when I slice up vegetables for the evening stew or curry:)

I carry a light neck knife on thin leather, it would break before it strangled me- and as has been said, the knife is at hand....

It is amazing what you can catch those pass laynards on. They need breakaways so bet you would on a Neck Knife.

My major injury with this sort of thing, you have no idea who much it hurts to try and pick you bike up by your ears. That with earphone cable, something that seems to break because it feels like it.

The thing to watch is bending down and then standing back up.

maybe you should have the bino's and sharp dangerous ice spikes in a belt pouch then??

The binos only sit around my neck when I'm sat down watching something. The rest of the time they are stowed in rucksack.

The ice spikes are the only thing that hang around the neck when moving, and that's only when on ice, so they're easy to grab immediately if you fall through. They're designed for us in that way.

On a garroting note, I did once have a run in with a paper shredder eating my tie before I got to the stop button and reversed it. Very frightening, and most embarrassing; the crimson-faced walk of shame back across the office accompanied by peals of laughter from my colleagues.

As you were...

right... I've been following this thread for days now...... going to have rummage in my bits box and see what I can come up with.... I'm going to sort this, pics to follow!

In response to this I'd like to present the 3bears 'custom carry system' :)

as this is only a prototype I've had to use two different colours cord, and whatever buckles I could find ( as I'm totally out of paracord, I've just been using leftover scraps!)

used a Nexus Whistle buckle for the main clip....

and a Nexus contoured buckle for the back 'break away' as weak link- these are MilSpec I'm told, but there's no way I can see it supporting body weight, but it's tough enough to hold anything I'd want to have around my neck without giving

and a couple of the bit's I've decided I'm going to use it to carry...

PROBLEM SOLVED!!

It's not strangulation that you need to worry about, it is pressure on the baroreceptors that will cause you more problems. You can be unconscious in as little as 10 seconds and die as pressure is not alleviated.

Personally I dont hang anything around my neck but will put things over the body crosswise at a push. This is because I climb and the risk of falling and getting caught up is relatively high. For a walk in the woods then your risk is less - if you think of the activity that you are going to perform and the possible risks that may come with it e.g. kayaking or cycling could give you more chance of getting hung up (depending on where you go)......

It would be an interesting experiment to see if someone could free themselves using a neck knife if hung up on the cord as the panic starts to set in. I am not going to volunteer though......... ;)

I have woke up on the Judo map, and asked what happened?

It was then explained that my partner had just tried the strangle we were being taught early. The people who saw it say I just dropped like a ton of bricks. Get the right pressure in the right place and you just go. It does not take 10 seconds.

The problem is we use the words badly. A strangle restricts blood flow. A choke restricts air. They both stop oxygen getting places, but if you stop air it can take a long time to kill you. You stop blood flow and it can be instant.

That said would think the big problem is not that but of having something that can control your head's movement. You start the head moving and the body follows. Also the last part of your body you want to stop moving suddenly is your neck.
